Bright or primary-colored rooms go a long way when housing toys, which tend to be of the same colors. Pastel baby rooms become incongruous with growing children's gear. In my son's room, we upholstered the walls, chair, and crib in bright green faux leather both because I love the color and because of its usefulness in mess prevention. The dark rug shows fuzz balls so it appreciates frequent vacuuming but spills have been of no consequence.
